How about some shopping now? You’re sure to find a souvenir or two in the town’s shops, including a Villeroy & Boch factory outlet, Germany’s oldest toy shop or a goldsmith who can re-create the wedding ring of Martin Luther’s wife Katharina von Bora.

6 p.m.

In the evening, join a guided city tour. You’ll discover the most beautiful spots of this Renaissance and Reformation town and learn all about its heyday in the 16th century as well as its more recent history.

Museum Path

11.30 a.m.

A new permanent exhibition that was opened in Hartenfels Palace in 2017 invites visitors into the apartments of John Frederick I, Elector of Saxony (also known as Johann the Magnanimous). You’ll learn about the life of the last Ernestine Elector and everyday life in his palace.

12.45 p.m. Hartenfels Palace is a must-see, with a fascinating history and some examples of mind-blowing architecture: To this day, engineers and architects are amazed at the so-called Wendelstein, a self-supporting spiral staircase. Climb up the 163 steps of the Hausmannsturm tower and enjoy the view.

Enjoy the view!

1 p.m.

You deserve a rest now and the café in the palace court yard, set against the backdrop of the Wendelstein staircase, is perfect for a bite to eat. Or try another of the restaurants in the Old Town.

2.30 p.m.

Continue your tour on the museums’ trail and visit the impressive cellars of the brewery museum, the “Katharina-Luther-Stube” as the only memorial site commemorating Martin Luther’s wife and the “Spalatinhaus” museum in the oldest priests’ house in Saxony.

Steeped in history

4 p.m.

If you’d rather venture out of town, visit “Gestüt Graditz” (Graditz Stud), founded in 1686 by the Elector of Saxony. Today, Trakehners and English Thoroughbreds are bred here in historical surroundings.

Trips to the nature

6 p.m.

On your way back to Torgau, stop by the traditional restaurant “Elbehof Werdau” or have dinner in one of the atmospheric restaurants in town, such as “Herr Käthe“ (Mr Käthe), which is a quaint as its name.

8 p.m.

Still up for more? Then pick and choose from the town’s event calendar or, for something a bit more quiet, saunter across the Elbe bridge and enjoy splendid views of Torgau and Hartenfels Palace from the river’s eastern embankment.

10 a.m.

Delve deeper into history or just relax? On your last day in Torgau, the choice is yours.

Final Spurt!
