The Woman at Luther’s Side

There has been much argument as to whether women were the winners or losers of the Reformation. Although he thought nothing of women in public life and saw them only as housewives and mothers, Martin Luther did fight for the education of all people, men and women. His thesis of the priesthood of all believers was perceived by women as an encouragement to discover for themselves the message of faith. Luther’s wife Katharina admittedly fits in with her husband’s image of women, but she did command utmost respect from him and did not need to hide behind the great man.
