The overall picture of Saxon industrial heritage includes ancient craft and manufacturing, where they were either precursors of industrial production or have survived in niches. The production of porcelain could never be fully automated and for Meissen, the oldest manufacturer in Europe, the technical and artistic skills of the employees are their biggest asset. Glashütte watchmaking also relies on these talents. Some crafts that have disappeared, were once heavily industrialized, while in the manufacture of musical instruments only industrial production no longer plays a role. The best however, is that visitors can look over the manufacturers’ shoulders everywhere, no matter whether they call their work industry or craft.
