Silver Rush

When settlers found silver near Christiansdorf in 1168, this marked the start of more than 800 years of mining history, the foundation of the wealth of Saxony and the origin of technological innovation and economic ways of thinking that later enabled the country to become the leading industrial region in Germany. Today, adventure mines, technical monuments and last but not least the language and living traditions of the locals bear witness to these booms. Incidentally, Saxony is still mining country. Lignite is extracted in four open-cast mines, and nearly 300 small and medium enterprises produce soils, stones and geothermal energy.
