Bizarre rocks, wild, romantic and densely wooded gorges and breathteaking views.

Description

The Painter’s Path in the National Park Saxon Switzerland features a plethora of bizarrely formed rocks, densely wooded, wild and romantic gorges plus majestic table mountains providing breathtaking views. Painters have always been attracted by these picturesque rocks and you can follow in the footsteps of famous Romantic painters such as Caspar David Friedrich, Carl Gustav Carus and Ludwig Richter. On this hiking trail, steeped in tradition, ramblers will encounter the fascinating rock landscape of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains at its most scenic. Don’t miss the numerous sights along the way such as the Canaletto town of Pirna or the house of the Impressionist painter Robert Sterl in Wehlen-Naundorf and not to forget the many inviting wayside inns.

By the way, more than 6,000 ramblers from all over Germany voted Saxon Switzerland third in a ranking of Germany’s most popular hiking regions.
