With the Reformation came the demand to open up education to everybody. For Martin Luther and other moderate Reformers, in a time in which most people could neither read nor write, pictures from the Bible had great educational value. A masterpiece of the High Renaissance is the “Bible House” in Görlitz, one of the approximately 3,500 listed buildings in the town center, the largest conservation area in Germany. On the outside facade on two levels there are five scenes from the Old Testament and five from the New.
