On the night of St. Bartholomew’s Day in 1572, French Catholics murdered thousands of their fellow citizens, the Huguenots, adherents of the new Protestant faith. In »Les Huguenots«, Giacomo Meyerbeer employs all the means of grand opera to show how religious conflict can lead to massacre. In this key work in the history of opera – and one which has only regained popularity in recent years – Meyerbeer’s music develops a hypnotic power, which is impossible to escape.
