The Knappenrode energy factory with its impressive historic facilities is an industrial monument of national importance. Started operating in 1918, the clattering of its briquette presses until its closure in 1993 determined the rhythm of an entire region. The Federal Government and the Free State of Saxony are providing almost 2.4 million euros for the ongoing conversion of the industrial monument. In 2020, the Energiefabrik will reopen its doors as a modern museum with unusual event formats. Then a new, modern permanent exhibition will tell the story of the old district.
