The Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz will celebrate its 100th anniversary as a municipal museum in 2020. In addition, the 160th anniversary of the founding of the Kunsthütte zu Chemnitz, the civic art association on whose collection initiative the museum was founded, will be celebrated. On the occasion of this double anniversary, the exhibition throughout the building shows a representative selection from the extensive holdings of the art collections on Theaterplatz, the Museum Gunzenhauser, the Schloßbergmuseum and the Carlfriedrich Claus Archive.
With works from the Middle Ages to the present day, drawn from the genres of painting, sculpture, graphics and
Textile Art, an insight into the historically grown and diverse collections will be given. Works from the Romantic period, Impressionism and Classical Modernism form the conceptual focus. In terms of content, the exhibition focuses on the modernist gallery established in the 1920s in the König-Albert-Museum and known throughout Germany, the losses during National Socialism and the various acquisition strategies in the course of time.
On the occasion of the anniversary, we are offering interested parties a look behind the scenes of the museum's work twelve times this year, on the first - the free - Friday of each month.
