More details of the place of event

The new permanent exhibition of the Military History Museum of the Bundeswehr in the New Armoury at Königstein Fortress presents a cultural history of fortified sites and fortresses in twelve chapters with over 200 objects and pictures.

The need to protect oneself is one of the basic human constants. Man protected himself from the aggression, expansionist urge or greed of his conspecifics as well as from storms or wild animals. With the same inventiveness with which he created safe and solid places, man has always devised ways and means to overcome, break through, undermine or fly over such protective structures. The destructive power of firearms finally forced the erection of ever stronger walls. Movement warfare using tanks and war in the air, where walls cannot be erected, changed the requirements for fortified places. Nuclear weapons, the use of which would turn our world into a hostile zone, represent the temporary end point of this development.
