Artists from the Gunzenhauser Collection, whose works were on display at documenta II in 1959, will be presented until 25 October 2020 in the exhibition "Art has become abstract" (Werner Haftmann), including Gerhard Altenbourg, Willi Baumeister, Carl Buchheister, Rolf Cavael, Ernst Wilhelm Nay and Serge Poliakoff. Against the backdrop of the Cold War, abstraction was associated with freedom from a Western perspective after the Second World War, while realism was inseparably associated with a totalitarian, first National Socialist, later Socialist-Communist regime. One recognized in abstraction the possibility of a radical liberation of the visual arts, which can be directly translated into pictures by means of painting.
