Upper Lusatia

In the eastern part of Saxony, you’ll find a hidden region full of surprises and unique traditions, a lot of them closely related to the Sorbs, a Slavic-speaking ethnic minority living here. Görlitz, Germany’s easternmost city, is the star of Upper Lusatia. Its jaw-dropping architecture from late Gothic to Art Nouveau even caught the eye of Hollywood producers as the perfect backdrop for filming anything from “The Reader” to “The Grand Budapest Hotel”. Stepping outside town, the Lusation Lakeland is a model regeneration project which has turned a former mining area into a holiday destination with numerous lakes and lots of options for fun by and on the water. Take your pick which side of the region suits your taste best!

Things to do when visiting Upper Lusatia

  • Explore the town of Zittau with its delightful old town. The Italian-style town hall and the church of St. Johannis are just two of the many buildings worth seeing. The town is also home to important artifacts from the Middle Ages: The Zittau Lenten Cloths – or Fastentücher in German – are religious treasures and genuine works of art not to be missed!

  • Visit Rammenau’s Baroque palace for its sophisticated interior design and beautiful gardens.

  • The Oberlausitzer Heide- und Teichlandschaft” is a UNESCO biosphere reserve and unique landscape of heathland and ponds, best discovered on foot or by bike. Try the nature discovery trails!

  • Muskau Park is a must for garden lovers. A UNESCO World Heritage since 2004, it was designed in the 19th century as a classic English landscape garden. Don’t miss the view from the tower of the palace on the grounds of the park.

  • Kamenz is the birthplace of the famous German writer and representative of the Enlightenment, Gotthold Ephraim Lessing. The town’s Lessing museum provides insights into his childhood in the 18th century, his work and life.

  • For all you steam train buffs out there: Hop on the historic steam railway (since 1890) from Zittau to Oybin and enjoy a scenic trip through the Zittau Mountains.

A dinosaur adventure for all the family

Experience prehistoric times full of excitement and fun

  • You and your children are proper dinosaur fans? We’ve got the right thing for you then: In Saxony’s dinosaur park near Bautzen over 200 of the prehistoric giants seem to come back to life amidst a unique primeval forest-like vegetation.
  • In addition, there are entertaining attractions and exciting play areas inspiring kids to climb, slide, splash about and explore. And, not to forget, lots of food and drink options for children and grown-ups alike.
  • Currently, the dinosaurs are in hibernation. From 28 March 2022, the dinosaur park will open its doors and welcome young and old dinosaur explorers for the new season!

Special tip:

camping in the Lusatian Lakeland

Camping is more popular than ever. In the Lusation Lakeland, you can choose “your style”, be it a simple hut or 5-star glamping. There are also great sites for camper vans or caravans, many of them directly on the lake.
