Climbing and hiking in the holiday region of Saxon Switzerland

Saxon Switzerland Bastei Photo Frank Richter

The holiday region of Saxon Switzerland offers one of the most spectacular landscapes in Germany: the Elbe Sandstone Mountains with the national park Saxon Switzerland. Densely wooded table mountains and isolated sandstone rocks rise all around as far as the eye can see. Like a blue string the Elbe meanders through the valley with its numerous gorges - past small towns and health resorts. The Elbe is the waterway of the largest and oldest paddle steamer fleet in the world. The 1.100 rocks are a climbing paradise for mountaineers. A huge network of hiking trails awaits the hikers. The most popular hiking trail is the Malerweg. It leads to the most beautiful places in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains like the "Basteifelsen" (bastion rock), to the open-air theatre Felsenbühne Rathen or to the fortress Festung Königstein. The bizarre rock formations as well as the city Pirna and the vast Elbe floodplains in the direction of Dresden shape the backdrop for the popular cycle path Elberadweg. Saxon Switzerland is also the home of the music festival "Sandstone & Music" and the Sebnitzer Seidenblumen (silk flowers).
