Pirna - the city to Saxon Switzerland

A city like a painting

Embedded in the landscape of the Dresden Elbe Valley with vineyards, castles and the Elbe Sandstone Massifs of the national park of Saxon Switzerland, the silhouette of Pirna lifts out.

The church steeples of the medieval historic centre greet from afar - it is hard to believe that, between the first mentioning in 1233 in a document from bishop Heinrich of Meißen, the Nordic War around 1706 and the dreadful flood disaster in 2002, this city is looking back on a turbulent past.

Artfully decorated town houses

The tracks of fire and water have vanished almost completely thanks to decades of reconstruction. So that Pirna shines once more with its architectural treasures in every corner: artfully ornamented town houses with stately gables and oriels, like the Teufelserker and Engelserker (devil's and angel's oriel), line the cobble-stoned alleys. Secluded courtyards reveal lively activity in restaurants and small shops.

The city centre, preserved in its original state, with the guildhall, rich in gothic portals, the Sonnenstein fortress, the protestant city church of St. Marien and the Canaletto-house tell the story of the more than 775-year-old city. By the way, several historical townscapes of Pirna can be admired in the picture gallery in Dresden - painted by the famous Italian veduta artist Bernardo Bellotto, called Canaletto.

City Church of St. Marien

The late gothic hall church of St. Marien captivates with its three naves and the unique reticulated vault. Like the Church of Our Lady in Dresden, the roof hosts chimes with seven different tones. The baptismal font with 26 small children's figurines, already admired by Goethe, and the figural ceiling paintings with their many biblical scenes are also worth seeing.

Tip: Canaletto Path
A walk on the Canaletto path is simply charming. It is part of the Malerweg (painter's trail). Beneath the Sonnenstein fortress a beautiful view on the Pirna vineyards presents itself. Besides, the path leads through the oldest district of Pirna, the Schifftorvorstadt.
