Saxony. State of the Arts.

Dresden - World-class art and culture

If you ask yourself which Saxon city is worldwide advertising with the cheeky angels from Raphael's Sistine Madonna, then there is only one answer: Dresden. Maybe the angels are also an indication that Dresden is nicknamed "Florence on the Elbe"?

However: The epithet shall express that the architecture and art of the more than 800-year-old city form a perfect symbiosis.

Die Frauenkirche - The Church of Our Lady

The story is truly moving: built in 1736 by subscription as most important protestant dome building, burnt out and reduced to a pile of rubble in 1945 after the nights of bombing, 1994-2005 rebuilt stone by stone with donations from all over the world as a symbol of reconciliation.

Today, the colourful embellished Church of Our Lady is also used for concerts.

The State Art Galleries

For 450 years the collections have been displaying a unique abundance of world-class works of art. The Porcelain Museum in the Zwinger is the world's biggest museum of its kind. Raphael's Sistine Madonna adorns the Old Masters Gallery. The "Green Vault" accommodates probably the most significant treasury in the world. The "Türckische Cammer" presents the most famous Ottoman collection in Germany.

The Semper Opera

European music history was written here. In the earlier building Richard Wagner premiered three operas. In the present theatre building, named after its constructor Gottfried Semper, Richard Strauss premiered nine of his twelve operas. Additionally to the opera and ballet performances and concerts, the Dresden State Orchestra plays here - one of the ten best orchestras in the world.

The Elbe Valley

Lined up like pearls on a string, stately castles, monumental representative buildings, historic mansions and romantic vineyards are located alongside the Elbe. They shape the picture of the Elbe Valley as a unique cultural landscape. The most beautiful way to explore it is either on the Elberadweg (Elbe Cycling Path) or with the historic paddle steamers.

The New Town

Dresden's most urban and lively district glamorously begins at the Haupt- and Königstraße. Beyond the Albertplatz countless pubs and international restaurants, art galleries and trendy fashion stores ensure the atmosphere in the redeveloped Gründerzeit quarter, which reminds of the Parisian Quartier Latin and Barcelona. The most creative architecture can be found in the Kunsthofpassage.
