Annaberg-Buchholz - The city of mountains and Adam Ries
The story of the city Annaberg-Buchholz, founded in 1496, was strongly influenced by the mining industry.
Thus, silver findings brought her great wealth. The distinctive churches, amongst other things, are based thereon.
Church of St. Annen
In 1499 the foundation stone for the famous Church of St. Annen was laid. It is to this day Saxony's biggest, late gothic hall church and famous for its Bergaltar (mountain altar). It rises high above the city and thus characterizes its silhouette. No less significant is the church of St. Marien with its mining crib, Saxony's only mountain church.
Adam-Ries-House
Not only the treasures of the earth but also the ideas of the most notable personalities, traditions and customs, handicrafts and artwork are entwined with the mountain city. For example, Adam Ries, the world-famous German arithmetician, taught maths at his school for arithmetic. Today, the school is a museum, where guests can acquire their arithmetic diploma based on the methods of Adam Ries.
Frohnauer Hammer
Whoever would like to follow the tracks of the once rich silver ore deposits in Annaberg-Buchholz can nowadays visit one of the three visitor mines underground. A cultural monument of ore processing above ground is the Frohnauer Hammer with the original hammer mill technique. The mining and handicraft traditions of the Ore Mountains are a particularly moving experience during the Advent and Christmas season.
